auDA is proud to join the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to support Privacy Awareness Week. Running from 1 to 7 May 2023, it highlights the importance of promoting privacy and protecting the personal information of all Australians, including online.
The information and technology landscape is increasingly complex and the importance of best-practice privacy processes should be front of mind for all.
Privacy protections at auDA
auDA is committed to protecting the privacy and rights of people in relation to their personal information. auDA’s Privacy Policy sets out our compliance with the Australian Privacy Principles, including how and why we collect your personal information, and the purposes for which your personal information may be used.
We only retain data that is necessary to carry out our work and do not request or retain additional information. Personal information, as outlined in the Privacy Act, is information that personally identifies you, or from which you can be personally identifiable.
There are several reasons we may collect and use personal information. For example, if you make a complaint to auDA about a .au domain name, we collect your name and contact details so that we can investigate and respond to you about the complaint. Similarly, if you join our .au member program, we record your name and contact details so we can keep you informed about .au news, industry insights, upcoming events and auDA consultations.
Secure data for a secure .au
auDA has a strong data security culture that engages all staff across the organisation. We maintain certification in ISO 27001, the international standard for best practice information security.
Additionally, all auDA staff and Board Directors carry out training on their responsibilities under the Privacy Act and undertake regular security awareness training. Our technical staff also receive ongoing specialist training to stay on top of emerging security trends.
Safeguarding the personal information of people who engage with auDA is one of the important ways in which we help deliver a trusted and secure .au for all Australians.
How you can enhance your privacy online
Privacy Awareness Week 2023 focuses on getting back to basics. There are some simple steps you can take to protect the privacy of your personal information:
Think about who you are sharing your personal data with. Don’t share it without good reason, and only share what’s necessary
Install security updates for devices and apps promptly to ensure your security settings are optimised
Use strong passphrases and where possible activate multi-factor authentication
Understand and update the privacy settings on websites, apps and devices – default privacy settings can allow your personal information to be shared with or sold to a third parties
If your privacy is breached, act quickly to reduce your risk of harm by taking steps such as changing your passphrases, being alert for scams and keeping an eye on your credit report and financial accounts for any unauthorised activity.
