Understand the rules and guidelines governing domain name monetisation in the .au domain, which covers investing, leasing and sub-licensing.

Domain investing and monetisation

Domain monetisation refers to the practice of registering a domain name to sell, lease or hold the domain name to generate revenue. This includes using the domain name to generate revenue from advertising links on a website associated with the domain name.

Domain monetisation is:

  • Permitted in the com.au, net.au and .au direct namespaces where it is undertaken in accordance with the .au Licensing Rules, including meeting registrant eligibility requirements and allocation requirements for com.au and net.au domain names
  • Prohibited in the org.au, asn.au, id.au, edu.au and the State and Territory namespaces.

Leasing or sub-licensing .au domain names is prohibited under the .au Licensing Rules.
