A .au domain name (such as ‘getyour.com.au’) is an important digital asset that helps people find you or your business online and signals to people that you have a connection to Australia. In some instances, registrants may wish to transfer their domain name to another eligible registrant.
Can I transfer my .au domain name licence to another person?
Yes. You can transfer a domain name licence to another registrant provided:
- You are eligible to hold the licence at the date of transfer
- The person you are transferring the licence to meets the Australian presence requirement and other eligibility and allocation criteria at the date of transfer
- You request the transfer in writing to your registrar
- Your licence is not subject to any complaint process under auDA rules, dispute resolution or court proceedings
- Your licence term has not expired.
This is referred to as a Registrant Transfer and is described in section 2.13 of the .au Licensing Rules.
What action does the person who the licence is being transferred to need to take?
The person who will become the new registrant (the transferee) must:
- Enter into a new Licence Agreement with the registrar
- Specify the new licence period
- Pay the new licence fee.
Who can I transfer my .au domain name licence to?
You can only transfer your domain name to someone who meets the Australian presence requirement and other eligibility and allocation criteria, as set out in the .au Licensing Rules.
Do I have to pay a fee for transferring a .au domain name licence to another person?
A new licence is established when you transfer a domain name licence to another
person. Depending on agreed transfer arrangements, the new or existing registrant must pay for the new licence. The registrar may also charge a fee for performing the transfer. Prices will vary between registrars.
How do I request a .au domain name transfer to another person?
Contact your registrar to request a domain name licence transfer to another eligible registrant. Your registrar will ask you to provide details of the transfer.
Before the transfer takes place, the registrar will check that you and the person who the licence is being transferred to satisfy the relevant eligibility and allocation requirements.
