.au Domain Administration (auDA) is currently inviting comment on a public issues paper about the way .au domain names are allocated and used. The paper has been prepared by a Names Policy Panel consisting of nominated members of the Australian Internet community who have expressed interest in helping shape policy for the .au domain space.

Innovative Internet projects awarded grants

The auDA Foundation Board is pleased to announce that 14 projects will be supported in the 2014 funding round.  This year the Foundation awarded grants totalling $324,465, including two PhD scholarships.

One of the funded projects is the University of Newcastle's Best Footprint Forward pilot. The research project aims to investigate child, parent/carer and teacher awareness about 'digital footprints' and strategies to manage these.  The results, in this currently under-researched area, will generate a robust evidence base for the development of positive digital footprint resources to educate and empower Australian families.

‘How the Internet is transforming Australian society’

There is little doubt that 2014 has presented numerous challenges to Internet users and legislators. The data retention bill, the worldwide ‘GamerGate’ controversy and rampant online harassment affect us all. Debate within the third sector about the implications of initiatives like the Ice Bucket Challenge and the impact of limited Internet access on young Australians in remote and indigenous communities has been intense. Conversely, we know that more young people than ever are engaged in political and social debate because of their ability to participate easily online. The Internet continues to transform Australian society, for better or for worse.
